Enterprise resource planning (ERP)

ERP is software that keeps sales, purchases, stock, accounts and other business records in one connected system.

ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. The name sounds like something only large companies use, but the idea is simple: instead of a sales register, a stock register, a supplier khata and a separate cash book, everything lives in one system. When one thing changes, every related record changes with it.

Example

A Multan distributor sells goods worth Rs 250,000 to a retailer on credit. In a paper system, the munshi writes the bill, updates the stock register, and adds Rs 250,000 to the retailer's page in the khata. Three entries, three chances to make a mistake. In an ERP, the bill is entered once. Stock goes down, the retailer's balance goes up by Rs 250,000, and the sale appears in the day's sales report. When the retailer later pays Rs 100,000, his balance drops to Rs 150,000.

Why it matters

  • Fewer entries mean fewer mistakes and less time for the munshi.
  • The owner can see stock, sales and outstanding balances without asking anyone.
  • Reports are ready when needed, including tax reports.

How software handles it

Taajir is an ERP built for Pakistani trading businesses and manufacturers. It connects sales, purchases, inventory, party ledgers, payments, expenses and reports, runs as a web app, a Windows desktop app and a mobile app, and keeps working offline. Factories can add its Manufacturing module. Businesses with processes no product covers, such as schools or clinics, usually need custom software.
